Sport BJJ

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. It is a derivative of early 20th century Kodokan Judo, which was itself then a recently-developed system (founded in 1882), based on multiple schools (or Ryu) of Japanese jujutsu. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and proper technique; most notably, by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat them. BJJ can be trained for self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Sparring (commonly referred to as 'rolling') and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition.

TRAINING

Classes will begin with a fifteen minute warm up, which will consist of calisthenics, cardiovascular training, and drills that are designed specifically for grappling. The warm up will be followed by a series of active stretches.

Jiu Jitsu instruction will begin after the warm up and stretching are complete. The instruction will consist of a technique demonstration, followed by the students practicing this technique. Usually, two or three techniques are shown during each class. These techniques often build on each other, giving the students a variety of options from a given position. Questions can be asked at any time, and will be answered in a clear and effective manner. At the close of the technique section, students will have the opportunity to continue drilling techniques, or to spend time sparring with fellow students, and instructors. All sparring will be conducted in a safe, controlled manner. Jiu Jitsu translates to ‘gentle art’, and should be practiced accordingly.

Jiu Jitsu is for everyone, and no one shall be excluded based on size, shape, or physical limitations. Before beginning any rigorous physical activity, you should consult your physician.

KIMONO/GI

Training in a kimono/gi is absolutely essential for understanding Jiu-Jitsu. The important key elements of Jiu-Jitsu are: control and movements while in 'base'. A gripped kimono will restrict the wearer's 'incorrect' movements to promote proper posture and correct reaction against compromising situations.

Additionally, training in the gi builds stamina. Conditioning is an essential attribute in all athletics.

Be sure to have grappling-quality gi (Judo competition standard). A thin collar on a jacket is dangerous when lapel-chokes are applied, while thin pants will rip easily due to gripping on the pants-legs for control during training.
